چکیده

We present archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and simultaneous Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) data of the eclipsing low mass Xray binary (LMXB) X 1822−371. Our spectral analysis shows that a variety of simple models can fit the spectra relatively well. Of these models, we explore two in detail through phase resolved fits. These two models represent the case of a very optically thick and a very optically thin corona. While systematic residuals remain at high energies, the overall spectral shape is well-approximated. The same two basic models are fit to the X-ray light curve, which shows sinusoidal modulations interpreted as absorption by an opaque disc rim of varying height. The geometry we infer from these fits is consistent with previous studies: the disc rim reaches out to the tidal truncation radius, while the radius of the corona (approximated as spherical) is very close to the circularization radius. Timing analysis of the RXTE data shows a time lag from hard to soft consistent with the coronal size inferred from the fits. Neither the spectra nor the light curve fits allow us to rule out either model, leaving a key ingredient of the X 1822−371 puzzle unsolved. Furthermore, while previous studies were consistent with the central object being a 1.4 M neutron star, which has been adopted as the best guess scenario for this system, our light curve fits show that a white dwarf or black hole primary can work just as well. Based on previously published estimates of the orbital evolution of X 1822−371, however, we suggest that this system contains either a neutron star or a low mass (<∼ 2.5 M ) black hole and is in a transitional state of duration shortward of 10 years.

A precessing accretion disc in the intermediate polar XY Arietis?

Context. XY Ari is the only intermediate polar to show deep X-ray eclipses of its white dwarf. Previously published observations with Ginga and Chandra have also revealed a broad X-ray orbital modulation, roughly antiphased with the eclipse, and presumed to be due to absorption in an extended structure near the edge of an accretion disc. The X-ray pulse profile is generally seen to be double-pe...

On the hard X-ray spectra of radio-loud active galaxies

Over the last few years X-ray observations of broad-line radio galaxies (BLRGs) by ASCA, RXTE and BeppoSAX have shown that these objects seem to exhibit weaker X-ray reflection features (such as the iron Kα line) than radio-quiet Seyferts. This has lead to speculation that the optically-thick accretion disc in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) may be truncated to an optically-thin flow in...

Broad - band BeppoSAX observation of the low - mass X - ray binary X 1822 - 371

Results of a 1997 September 9–10 BeppoSAX observation of the 5.57 hr low-mass X-ray binary (LMXRB) X 1822371 are presented. The 0.3–40 keV spectrum is unusually complex and cannot be fit by any of the standard models applied to other LMXRB. At least two components are required. One component has a shape consistent with that expected from the Comptonization of an input soft (Wien) spectrum while...

BeppoSAX and ASCA observations of the nearby (z = 0.184), high–luminosity, radio-quiet quasar PDS 456 are presented. The X–ray spectrum is characterized by a prominent ionized edge at 8–9 keV (originally discovered by RXTE, Reeves et al. 2000) and by a soft excess below 1.5 keV. The lack of any significant iron Kα emission line suggests for the edge an origin from line–of–sight material rather ...

Low Luminosity States of the Black Hole Candidate Gx 339−4. I. Asca and Simultaneous Radio/rxte Observations

We discuss a series of observations of the black hole candidate GX 339−4 in low luminosity, spectrally hard states. We present spectral analysis of three separate archival Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) data sets and eight separate Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data sets. Three of the RXTE observations were strictly simultaneous with 843 MHz and 8.3–9.1 GHz radio ...
